Lost a lot of respect for this founder when she bragged about her product being non-GMO during the episode. GMO crops are safe and have saved one billion people (!!!) from dying in famines to date. If you really cared about sustainable agriculture, you wouldn't spout propaganda against crops that benefit the global poor.

It's unfortunate that so many Americans who consider themselves pro-science ignore the evidence when they don't like it.

It was in response to Phil's question about consumer's desire for organic goods. Non-GMO is typically the selling point used as the "next best thing" if you can't get organic. What are your thoughts on organic?

I'm aware of the fact that there's consumer demand for non-GMO, but that doesn't make it right. There is no scientifically or ethically valid reason to oppose GMO crops. When producers participate in this messaging, they are essentially contributing to an anti-science propaganda campaign. Consumers wouldn't be so wary of GMOs if people like this founder weren't constantly reinforcing the idea that GMOs are bad!

"Organic" as a term is broad to the point of near meaninglessness. On average, organic crops have lower yields and contribute more pollution per unit of output than conventional crops. It's possible to be organic and sustainable, but just following the organic standard doesn't mean that a producer is following best sustainability practices per se. AFAIK there are also no proven health benefits.

It seems the packaging would have been super easy to fix, it's just changing fonts and rearranging the location of text. I'm not sure why the investors made it such a big deal. I think they had other reservations and the packaging was just an excuse not to invest.

Maybe they felt it showed her lack of marketing experience overall, and the food companies that win are those with strong marketing (vs product). But she could hire for that role too… if she had the funding.
